Hello, I’m Stephan
I’m an architect and artist based in Vienna, Austria.
About me
Painting has always been a way for me to look at things differently — to slow down, observe, and reduce a landscape to what is essential. I am particularly drawn to landscapes, water, light and the changing atmosphere of a place. My watercolours are mostly painted from my own impressions, photographs and sketches made while travelling or simply observing the world around me. I work primarily with traditional watercolour on high-quality cotton paper. I enjoy the balance between precision and spontaneity that the medium allows: some elements are deliberately defined, while others are left to the water, pigment and paper. My background in architecture has naturally influenced the way I see and compose a picture. Proportion, space, light and structure play an important role in my work — but painting gives me the freedom to approach these things in a much more intuitive way. For me, a successful painting does not need to reproduce a place exactly. It should capture something of its atmosphere, light and memory.
